Herbal Medcine

A herbalist uses plants to help correct health problems or to maintain good health. These plants can either be given in tincture form, as dried herbs or powders, or there can be external preparations such as creams and oils.

Medical herbalists train for many years and complete 500 hours of clinical placement hours working side by side with experienced herbalists before attaining qualification. This means that the training is both of an extremely high academic standard, but also routed in practical experience, with many opportunities to learn from the wisdom of herbalists who came before.

The knowledge of medical herbalists is rooted in traditional folk medicine and many classic herbal texts are an important part of study. Alongside this, medical herbalists refer to the growing body of scientific research into plant medicine, to give them the tools they need to most effectively approach treatment.

Medical herbalists use clinical examination techniques as part of their diagnostic protocol, which may include the manual taking of blood pressure, cardiovascular or respiratory examination, or abdominal examination. Patients can also bring any test results to the herbal medicine appointment, along with lists of conventional medication, and these will inform treatment and allow the herbalist to work safely, avoiding potential interactions between herbal medicine and pharmaceutical drugs.

Following consultation, herbal medicine may be prescribed, and will either be given to the patient on the day, or in some cases will be prepared in the following days and sent through the post.
